Postural Correction
Many of the people who come to see me for an assessment regularly suffer
from muscle or joint pain. Often they are already being treated by
physiotherapists, chiropractors or osteopaths who have referred them to
me.
The types of pain being experienced vary greatly from client to client.
Some clients who are suffering from muscular pain benefit from deep
tissue massage which can be provided by physiotherapist or myself (see
sports massage).
Others require manipulations in order to help joints realign which needs
to be performed by one of the above practitioners. Both of the
approaches help to treat and temporarily reduce the pain.
Unfortunately the pain often returns and people are caught in the trap
of getting treatment after treatment in order to be able to get through
their everyday lives. Instead of just treating the pain my approach
involves diagnosing firstly what is physically causing the pain and then
attempting to stop the pain reoccurring.
What causes the pain?
As mentioned above the types of pain people experience is incredibly
varied but often the pain is a result of muscular imbalances and poor
postural habits.
For example a common postural abnormality that I often come across in
people is called upper crossed syndrome. This condition is typified and
seen in people who have rounded shoulders and a forward head posture.
Upper crossed syndrome can lead to head and neck pain, numbness or
tingling in the arms and hands. I often see this postural condition in
people who spend a lot of time driving or working at a desk.
This is just one example as there are many different postural conditions
and often people are suffering from aspects of several of them.
My approach
Above all else I am a personal trainer I am not a qualified
physiotherapist, chiropractor or osteopath. For this reason I work
closely with the above practitioners to enable us to diagnose and treat
the physical problems.
I then design exercise and stretching programs that help to correct the
muscular imbalances. In addition to this I will look closely at your
lifestyle and help to identify what is causing the problem. This may
include looking at the way you sit at a desk, the position of your car
seat or the way you walk or lift objects.
In addition to liaising with local health professionals I also regularly
attended courses/seminars and read current literature which all helps me
to keep up with developments in postural correction.
